New building for Hoyerswerda's high school: More space for better education!
There is movement in the educational landscape of Hoyerswerda! On June 19, 2025, the starting signal was given for an expanded high school, which has enjoyed great popularity since it opened on August 31, 2020. The new building, which is being built on unused land next to the auditorium, will not only create more space for students, but will also be designed as a modern learning environment.
The need for this new building is tremendous: According to Mayor Mirko Pink, the existing rooms are exhausted and there is no longer enough capacity to accommodate more students in the upper classes. Creative design of the school is of great importance, as head teacher Romy Stötzner emphasizes. The secondary school has set itself the goal of enabling every young person to graduate from school and to promote the students' independence through an innovative school concept, which includes, among other things, a "lunch band" and "productive learning".
Modular learning for the future
The planned two-story building will be constructed using the latest modular construction methods. This construction method not only enables rapid implementation, but also offers the flexibility to later adapt the interior to changing needs. Thomas Gröbe from bauhoys planning company mbH emphasizes that modular construction is both fast and sustainable. The total investment for the turnkey construction of the new school building amounts to 2.5 million euros, with 52.19% of the construction and planning costs being funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank. This happens as part of the SchulInfraVO.
Another plus point is that the new building will be in visual harmony with the listed existing high school building in the Bauhaus style. This shows the city's appreciation for the historical context and preservation of cultural heritage.
A call for participation
However, the design of the new school building is not just a matter for the planners. The school itself is largely shaped by teachers, students, parents and staff. Those responsible are calling on the community to actively participate in the school and to contribute their knowledge and time to projects or the newly founded support association. This not only strengthens the connection between school and home, but also promotes a sense of community.
The construction work is scheduled to be completed by the summer holidays, with a turnkey handover of the building in February/March 2026. This will be a further step towards improving the framework conditions for learning in Hoyerswerda in time for the start of the new school year.
