New building for Hoyerswerda's high school: More space for better education!

There is movement in the educational landscape of Hoyerswerda! On June 19, 2025, the starting signal for an extended high school was given, which has been very popular since its opening on August 31, 2020. The new building, which is being built on unused terrain next to the auditorium, will not only create more space for students, but also be designed as a modern learning environment.

The need for this new building is terrific: According to Mayor Mirko Pink, the existing rooms are exhausted, and the capacities are no longer sufficient to include other students in the upper classes. A creative design of the school is of great importance, as the headmistress Romy Stötzner emphasizes. The secondary school has set itself the goal of enabling every young person to graduate from school and promoting the independence of the students through an innovative school concept, which includes a "lunch band" and "productive learning".

modular learning for the future

The planned two -storey building is built in the latest modular construction. This construction not only enables rapid implementation, but also offers flexibility to adapt the interiors to changed needs later. Thomas Gröbe from the Bauhys Planungsgesellschaft mbH emphasizes that module construction is both quick and sustainable. The entire investment for the turnkey establishment of the new school building amounts to 2.5 million euros, whereby 52.19 % of the construction and planning costs are funded by the Saxon construction bar. This happens in the framework of the school infravo.

Another plus is that the new building in optical harmony with the listed existing building of the high school in Bauhaus-style will be in the Bauhaus style. This shows the city's appreciation for the historical context and the preservation of the cultural heritage.

A call for participation

The design of the new school building is not just the matters of the planner. The school itself is largely designed by teachers, students, parents and employees. Those responsible call the community to actively participate in the school and to bring their knowledge and time to projects or the newly founded support association. This not only strengthens the connection between school and parents, but also promotes the community feeling.

The construction work should be completed by the summer vacation, with a turnkey handover of the building in February/March 2026. This will take another step to improve the framework conditions for learning in Hoyerswerda at the beginning of the new school year.
