Archaeologists in action: Brohna ski jump in focus of dangerous times!
Exciting news from Saxony: As part of the Interreg project “Fragile legacy/Kruche dziedzictwo”, which runs from October 2024 to September 2027, important archaeological investigations are pending. Project partners are the Saxony State Office for Archeology and the Natural Sciences University of Breslau. The aim is to examine selected monuments in detail, including the Brohna ski jump.
One of the first measures planned is to take aerial photographs with drones in order to collect comprehensive data on the condition of the monuments. Small-scale excavations are also being carried out in order to analyze the structure of the monument in more detail. “We would like to understand the preservation conditions of archaeological monuments in more detail and assess the degree of risk,” explains a spokesman for the project.
Challenges posed by climate change
The need for this project is underscored by the already noticeable impacts of climate change. Extreme weather events such as dry periods, heavy rain and storms pose new challenges for archaeological sites. Agricultural use and the expansion of renewable energies also affect the monuments. Over 80% of archaeological monuments are located on land used for agriculture or forestry.
Another important aspect of the project is the development of a criteria catalog. This should include recommendations for action and protective measures for threatened monuments. Financial support comes from the European Union through funds from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the INTERREG Poland – Saxony 2021-2027 cooperation program. This ensures that our region's valuable heritage is not only preserved, but also made future-proof.
