Lusatian consumers demand regional delicacies at fair prices

Something is happening in Lusatia: consumers are increasingly wanting healthy and fairly priced food from the region. This is shown by a current survey organized by the Saxon State Board of Trustees for Rural Areas (SLK) as part of the “Lausitz tastes good” marketing initiative. Participants can give their opinion until September 30, 2025 and thereby make their contribution to increasing the visibility of regional products. The survey is a central part of the Bio-Regio-Modellregion Bautzen project, which aims to make regional foods from Lusatia better known and create a strong brand identity. The initiative has been running since 2007 and connects over 40 small and medium-sized companies in the agriculture and food industry - a real joint effort!

The idea is that the targeted marketing of local products creates a brand that shines nationwide and gives Lusatia a distinctive profile. But what do consumers actually think about regional food? The project team wants to clarify this question with the ongoing survey. The answers to these questions are crucial in order to align market strategies accordingly.

Maintaining quality

One of the central demands of the survey is that regional producers should be paid appropriately. This is also reflected in the claim that the initiative has: The products, which are made known under the motto “genuine and good – simply a pleasure”, should impress in terms of quality and regionality. The collaboration in the network is also supported by the Saxon State Board of Trustees for Rural Areas. V. actively supports what benefits the 40 companies and provides a solid basis for their development.

In fact, a current consumer and market study running between June 2023 and May 2024 shows that despite a certain reluctance to buy, interest in regional food is growing. It was examined what exactly people understand by “regional” and where hurdles or opportunities lie. These trends are particularly important for the food industry, which wants to adapt to the needs of consumers.

A strong network

The “Lausitz Tastes” network has established itself in recent years as a platform for the exchange and promotion of regional products. There are numerous companies on the initiative’s website, which are clearly listed in a “Companies” section. If you would like to find out more about regional producers and their offerings, you can find out more on the regional portal of the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. Many producers and processors are listed there and regional products are advertised.

In summary, there is something in the air in Lusatia - a growing awareness of the quality and value of regional food is becoming ever stronger. Consumers are willing to pay for healthy, sustainable and locally produced goods.
