Chemnitz starts broadband expansion 2.0: Fast Internet for everyone!

Something is happening in Chemnitz when it comes to internet access. From the third quarter of 2025, the long overdue broadband expansion 2.0 will be tackled in the city. The goal of the project is very clear: to improve broadband coverage by expanding a fiber optic network that is connected directly to the buildings - a so-called Fiber To The Building (FTTB). This means that the previously underserved addresses that were not taken into account in the first expansion stage in 2019 have a reason to be happy.

As the city administration reports, a total of 23 central PoP locations and 7 multifunctional housings will be built outside the city center as part of this project. These Point of Presence (PoP) serve as important interfaces between the main cable network, also known as the wide area backbone, and the new access network that ultimately leads to the customer connection. Here, light signals are transmitted to the glass fibers – the last “electrical point” in the entire network.

Investments in the future

A real dig into your wallet is also necessary: the total construction costs amount to around 4.81 million euros gross. Financing is provided by a community between the federal government and the Free State of Saxony. SysKom Kommunikationtechnik GmbH from Chemnitz was awarded the contract to carry out the project. The company is therefore responsible for helping Chemnitz make a significant leap forward in terms of internet provision.

The measures are important not only for the city, but also for the local citizens and companies. More and more people rely on a stable and fast internet connection, especially in today's digital world where working from home, streaming and online communication are the order of the day. Improving broadband coverage is therefore a clear step towards the future.”

A look into the future

With the start of the expansion in the third quarter of 2025 and the planned completion in the fourth quarter of 2026, a significant upgrade of the media infrastructure in Chemnitz is in sight. The expanded options are already exciting and are increasing anticipation for a faster, more reliable Internet connection.

The city of Chemnitz proves once again that it is ready to invest in the digital future and provide its citizens with better connections. If that's not a reason to celebrate!
