Chemnitz is pedaling again: CITY CYCLING promotes climate protection!

The anticipation in Chemnitz is great: the popular CITY CYCLING campaign will take place for the fifth time from September 1st to 21st, 2023. This international bicycle campaign by the Climate Alliance aims to promote cycling, strengthen health prevention and thus make a significant contribution to climate protection. This year the city has a special reason to celebrate because it is the European Capital of Culture and works closely with its sister city Düsseldorf. The latter has adjusted its own CITY CYCLING period accordingly, which further intensifies the exchange between the cities. The city of Chemnitz reports on the importance of this cooperation for promoting cycling.

Mayor Sven Schulze emphasizes how important the campaign is not only for the respective cities, but also for the solidarity of the citizens. The twin cities have already exchanged ideas in advance, including a guided bike tour through Chemnitz, which further strengthens the sense of community.

Highlights of the rally

A central part of CITY CYCLING in Chemnitz is the 2nd rally, which will take place on September 6th, 2025. It includes twelve different tours, all ending at the iconic Karl Marx Monument. The different levels of difficulty and lengths from 3 to 49 kilometers promise something for everyone. The police will accompany the participants so that everyone reaches their destination safely. Registration for the rally is necessary in order to be able to better plan the safety and scope of the event.

There is also a highlight coming up for the big final tour on September 18, 2023: the #chemnitzdrehtamradtour2025, which covers a distance of 18 kilometers and is also not without security - the police are on board here too.

Committed CITY CYCLING stars

Particular attention is paid to the CITY CYCLING Stars 2025, who are made up of Chemnitz citizens and actively support the campaign. These include, among others, the passionate racing cyclist Kerstin Fischer-Münzner, who will be competing with her team “Karl Marx Ballerinas”. Cindy Schierle, who uses the bike both for work and privately, and the supporter of CITY CYCLING, Marcel Krippner, also fought for a place on the stage. Kai Winkler also organizes the European Peace Ride and emphasizes the importance of cycling for climate protection.

“Every kilometer counts” is the motto – and not just for the participants in Chemnitz. The campaign invites everyone, whether in Düsseldorf or elsewhere, to take part in the campaigns, even on vacation. The recorded kilometers can be easily recorded online or via an app. This not only protects the environment, but is also good for your own health.

For everyone who is interested in promoting cycling, there is also support in other cities, such as the funding-related projects as part of climate protection. A closer look at the application process shows that project outlines are submitted in two phases and various deadlines must be observed. Those interested can read more about this on the websites of the respective cities and institutions.
