Meerkat offspring delights visitors to the Chemnitz Zoo!
There is great joy at Chemnitz Zoo: The meerkats have new offspring! The little animals, two of which were probably born, were born in an underground burrow at the end of June. The zookeepers had already been hoping for this moment when they noticed that the adult animals were missing from the enclosure. A clear sign that something exciting was happening in the sand bunker.
The young animals are now enjoying their first steps in the facility under the watchful eye of their family members. The rearing happens in a typical meerkat way: the mother and other group members are responsible and lovingly look after the new addition. The little ones often retreat to safe caves where their mother supplies them with her milk. This is a special moment for the recently established meerkat group, which now has two new faces after losing the old breeding male and giving up the breeding female.
A new home for the white-faced sakis
But there isn't just news about meerkats. Three white-faced sakis have also been at home at Chemnitz Zoo since April. This species, which has never been kept in the Saxon facility before, has settled in extremely well. A daily highlight in the tropical house is the feeding of these animals, which takes place either indoors or outdoors at 11.30 a.m., depending on the weather. The sexes differ significantly in their external appearance: while the males develop a striking white facial mask and black hair, the females remain in their gray-brown camouflage color.
When born, the young of the white-faced saki are the same grey-brown color as the mother and thus adapt perfectly to their environment. After about two months, the striking color change begins, giving the little ones a completely new look.
Opening times for visiting the zoo
There is good news for all animal lovers: the zoo is open daily in summer from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last entry is one hour in advance to give all visitors enough time to explore the wonderful wildlife. The wildlife gate is also open daily - guests can admire the animals here from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
