Experience nature: Sheep grazing for landscape conservation in Chemnitz!

An exciting event is just around the corner! On Tuesday, June 24th, those interested in nature have the opportunity to take part in an excursion on the topic of landscape conservation through grazing with sheep. The event starts at 5 p.m. and takes place at Max-Saupe-Straße 77, opposite the shopping market. Admission is free and participation is open to anyone who would like to show an interest in nature and the environment.

During this informative walk, which will last about two hours, Kerstin Herbig from the Josef Schwaiger transhumance sheep farm and Jens Börner from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the Chemnitz Environment Agency will report on the positive effects of extensive, nature-friendly grazing on the landscape and its benefits for insects and birds.

The importance of sheep grazing

Why is sheep grazing so important? The former military property on Max-Saupe-Straße has been grazed with sheep since the 1990s, which contributes significantly to the preservation of semi-open biotopes. Herds of sheep help to push back succession and at the same time promote biodiversity. Ongoing grazing not only increases biodiversity, but also provides valuable habitats for endangered species, as demonstrated by information from anl.bayern.de is confirmed.

The sheep are used in a variety of habitats, from poor grassland to heaths to sandy habitats. Their selective feeding style means they prefer plants with higher nitrogen content, which naturally regulates vegetation. In addition, the sheep's droppings, feces and urine, are valuable fertilizers that are used by insects and thus strengthen the food chains for many species of birds and other living beings exploitanimalkeeping.de explained.

A look behind the scenes

What can participants expect on the excursion? In addition to exciting information about everyday life and the challenges of sheep grazing, there are also insights into the nature conservation features of the area. The hike not only offers the opportunity to learn more about the importance of extensive grazing for nature conservation, but also about the historical development of the former parade ground areas, which were placed under protection as a natural monument in 1993.

In order to be best prepared, sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Binoculars could also be beneficial to fully enjoy the wildlife. So, pack up your curiosity and take part in this unique excursion!

At a time when nature is increasingly falling behind, knowledge of nature-friendly measures such as sheep grazing is of great value. Take the opportunity to learn more and perhaps even develop a new interest in agriculture and conservation. We look forward to numerous participants!
