Groundbreaking ceremony for Chemnitz school: modern learning meets monument protection!
The groundbreaking ceremony for the extension building will take place in Chemnitz on August 21st Chemnitz Cooperation School takes place. Mayor Ralph Burghart gave the official starting signal for this important construction project at 10 a.m., which is intended not only to optimize the premises of the already established school, but also to meet the requirements of contemporary learning.
The new two-story extension is being built at Brauhausstrasse 16 and includes a total of 8 classrooms and 4 group rooms. In addition, stairs and sanitary rooms, including a barrier-free toilet, will be created. Particular attention is paid to barrier-free access to the building, which is guaranteed by an elevator. These measures are particularly important in order to enable all students to fully participate in everyday school life.
Sustainability and flood protection
A pioneering feature of the project is the installation of a photovoltaic system with an output of 43 kWp, which will help meet the school's electricity needs. The heating energy is provided via the existing district heating system. Another important aspect of the construction project is the location, which is in a flood area of the Chemnitz River. Therefore, the new building will be raised to provide storage space for water and to ensure water flow. These flood protection measures are essential to minimize possible risks.
The total costs of the project amount to around 10.6 million euros, of which 5.3 million euros are funded by the Saxon Development Bank. The construction will take place in three phases; the second phase, which we are now in, began in October 2023 and is expected to be completed by August 2027.
A new chapter for education
The Chemnitz Cooperation School is a two-tier state school for grades 1 to 10 and offers comprehensive all-day programs as well as after-school care. A total of up to 560 students can be accommodated here. The original plan called for building a new school building with a sports hall at the Planitzwiese location. However, this decision was finally rejected by the city council in May 2023. Instead, the existing location on Brauhausstrasse was chosen, which is now to be comprehensively upgraded.
The building ensemble is not only architecturally appealing, but is also full of history. The design comes from Rudolf Weißer and was inaugurated in 1952. It is part of the Reitbahnstrasse reconstruction area and is considered a cultural monument - so for the city of Chemnitz it is not only an important place for education, but also a piece of its history that needs to be preserved.
