Dresden in a sports frenzy: German championships are exciting today!
Today, August 22nd, 2025, things are really going on in Dresden. In the BallsportARENA, the young and talented Anne Kleibrink, Olympic quarter-finalist in Paris, will compete in the women's foil team final. The competition starts at 10 a.m. and the pressure on the athlete couldn't be greater, as Kleibrink can already look back on an impressive 12 German championship titles. She has just returned from the World Championships in Tbilisi, where she finished 17th. Kleibrink himself commented on this with the words: “German championships are prestigious, my goal is to win one more title every year” ( dresden.de ).
But that's just the start of an exciting day, because at 2 p.m. the motto in the JOYNEXT Arena is “Attention, get set, go!” for the German championship title in the all-around gymnastics competition. Men's national coach Jens Milbradt is completely in his element here: “The German Championships are a stop between international highlights.” Even if some injured gymnasts return, the competition will be strong because not all experienced European Championships veterans are taking part. Nils Dunkel from SV Halle will not start on all devices. The favorites fighting for the title are Timo Eder (MTV Ludwigsburg), Glenn Trebing (TK Hannover) and Alexander Kunz (TSV Pfuhl).
Athletics at a high level
Parallel to these exciting competitions, the 125th German Athletics Championships begin in the Heinz Steyer Stadium. The focus here is on both the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. Defending champion Sandrina Sprengel (LG Steinlach- Zollern) reported back after tearing a muscle fiber in May. She recently shone with a best long jump performance of 6.44 meters. In the decathlon, an exciting duel in Ulm is developing between Manuel Eitel and Tim Nowak, who are considered favorites. However, Malik Diakité (Hannover 96) and Amadeus Gräber (Eintracht Frankfurt) are withdrawing their start, which could shake up the starting situation a bit.
Triathlon and more
However, the sporting activities don't stop there. The mixed relay relay triathlon will take place in Dresden's Alberthafen at 5:15 p.m. Defending champion Hylo Team Saar/Viernheim is back at the start and is represented by Lena Meißner, Chris Ziehmer, Tanja Neubert and Valentin Wernz. Your main competitor is the DSW 12 Darmstadt with participant Henry Graf.
The competition format will be exciting: 340 meters of swimming, 7.8 kilometers of cycling and 1.35 kilometers of running are to be completed. But everyone in the field of rhythmic gymnastics is also looking forward to the medal decision, which will take place in the JOYNEXT Arena. The focus is particularly on Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev (TSV Schmiden), who is preparing for the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
And if you think that says it all, you're wrong. Fistball and wowball will also be presented for the first time at the 2025 finals in Dresden. The fistball finals start at 11 a.m. in the exciting Final 4 format. The German wowball championships for women and men also start at 10 a.m. Coordinator Uwe Schneider is enthusiastic and sees the opportunity to bring the sport closer to more people ( dresden.de ).
