New Nossener Brücke: Million project brings traffic revolution to Dresden!
In Dresden something happens! The traffic is upgraded: the focus is on the construction work for the new Nossener Bridge and the “Campus Line” light railway line. These important projects are to be started in June 2026. The plans that were coordinated together with the city and Deutsche Bahn AG have already started in advance. Dresden.de reports that the tender for the entire project should take place in September 2023 .
The total costs for the light rail route amount to a proud 124 million euros. The city bears 38.7 million euros from the bridge fund. But that's just a part of the story! A hole in the financing of 85.2 million euros remains, which is due to the outstanding funding from the Free State of Saxony. Another look at the figures shows that the city has already received the planning approval decision months ago, which has been legally binding since December 4, 2023 .
project goals and challenges
The goal of the project is clear: the structurally strongly endangered Nossener bridge, the condition of which is classified as poor with a grade of 3.5. In addition, the new tram route will replace the heavily used bus line 61 between Löbtau and Strehlen and improve the accessibility of the University of Excellence. Structural requirements for a transition site for tram, bus and S-Bahn are also to be created on the Nossener Bridge.
But the project also carries risks. Delays in the tender could throw the implementation back by several years. The financial resources must be secured until the final approval, which makes the city council decision particularly important for the tender. A good hand is needed here to advance the plans in good time .
outlook on the financing
A positive message is already available: the Free State of Saxony is expected to be expected in autumn 2025. This is based on the new country and communal infrastructure financing law (LUKIFG) and the Sachsenfonds Act (SAFOG). The EU-wide award procedure for the construction work must begin on September 5, 2025 so that the surcharge for construction can be granted by the end of January 2026-provided that the funding commitment comes in time.
Now it means to keep an eye on the schedule and take the necessary steps. If everything goes according to plan, a better infrastructure for all Dresdeners could soon be realized. The anticipation of the new connection is already great, because the city is taking a step into the future!
