Safe bridge for the future: Loschwitz Elbe bridge is being repaired!

The Loschwitz Elbe Bridge, better known as the Blue Wonder, is currently undergoing major repairs that will ensure safety and stability for the next 30 years. The accompanying measures were launched on May 12, 2025, when the first closures were set up on the popular crossing in order to carry out necessary surveys. Dresden.de reports that The city council has already made funds available for this in the current double budget via the bridge fund.

The Blasewitz bridge side is to be renovated from 2026, parallel to the current work, in order to keep future traffic restrictions as low as possible. Those responsible are doing it with a good hand, because rapid progress is crucial in order to minimize traffic congestion.

Safe traffic flow is guaranteed

The good news for commuters: the bridge will remain open to traffic during the work. Motorized vehicles will be moved to the center of the bridge, while cyclists and public transport can continue to use the bridge. Pedestrians can also look forward to a safe crossing on the downstream side of the Elbe, where protective devices offer additional safety.

The repair work includes a suspended scaffolding under the bridge and a sectional enclosure that both protects the environment from blasting debris and protects the structure from harmful influences. The enclosure is carried out in seven individual sections, with work being carried out in two sections simultaneously. All necessary preparations, including permit applications and scaffolding planning, have now been completed.

Financing and funding

The procurement contracts for the renovation were awarded to Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co. KG, with a contract amount of around 17.5 million euros. It is pleasing to note that up to 50 percent of the construction costs are funded by the Free State of Saxony, which corresponds to a solid financial basis for the project.

The traffic situation around the Blue Wonder has changed significantly in recent years. The volume of traffic has fallen by 33 percent since 2009, from 34,000 vehicles to 23,000. This is another indication that space on the bridge is urgently needed. The discussion about alternative Elbe crossings, however, will only be relevant from 2050 at the earliest, as the established framework conditions by then are unclear so reports Dresden.de.

With these measures, Dresden shows that they have a good knack for the sustainable use of their infrastructure. The repair of the Loschwitz Elbe Bridge will not only be important for the current traffic situation, but also for future generations.
