New flood area in Wörthhof: flood protection for everyone!
The preparations for the controlled retention area “Wörthhof” on the Danube are taking shape. With the issuance of a flood area ordinance, a flood area is officially established that covers a total area of 768.1 hectares. This area lies along the Danube in the area of the town of Wörth an der Donau and the municipality of Pfatter, between river kilometers 2,347.7 and 2,357.3. As the City of Worth reported, this also has far-reaching consequences for flood protection in the region.
The aim of the retention area is clear: it is about ensuring flood protection, maintaining retention areas and averting dangers. The total amount of planned volume is approximately 29.8 million cubic meters. These measures are part of a comprehensive concept to create flood polder sites on the Danube.
Interpretation phase and citizen participation
The interpretation of the new regulation will take place from November 10th to December 9th, 2025. During this period, citizens have the opportunity to submit comments and objections until December 23, 2025. A meeting will be held after the deadline to discuss all comments and concerns. The documents for inspection, including the draft ordinance, explanatory report and various maps, are available online and in the town halls of the participating communities.
There was already a provisional security of the area in the past, which lasted from April 8, 2015 to April 8, 2022. The upcoming measures are the result of a comprehensive consultation process in accordance with Article 73 BayWG and Article 73 BayVwVfG, which provides for broad public participation.
Clear concept for flood protection
The implementation of the Wörthhof flood polder is not a new idea. In a spatial planning procedure that was initiated on January 11, 2023, several variants were examined, of which the larger variant, Wörthhof-sized, with 772 hectares and a retention level of around 30.5 million cubic meters, was recommended for implementation. This project is part of the flood protection concept “PRO Waters 2030”, which not only aims to prevent flood damage, but also to renaturate rivers and bring nature conservation to the fore. Information about developments to date is available at Regensburg Water Management Office to read.
The entire planning and execution requires exchange with municipalities, districts, planning associations, nature conservation associations and citizens. Concerns among residents, such as the impact on groundwater and the landscape as well as possible loss of land in agriculture, are taken seriously as part of a flood dialogue. These discussions have been taking place regularly since February 2015 and form a central pillar in clarifying all issues relating to flood protection.
