Frankenthal opens second drinking water fountain at Speyerer Tor!
That's where fresh water comes into play! On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, a new drinking water dispenser at the Speyerer Tor was officially inaugurated in Frankenthal. This facility is intended to help provide the city's population and visitors with free, barrier-free access to high-quality drinking water. The Frankenthal public utilities put in a lot of effort and laid around 18 meters of new drinking water pipes so that everything runs optimally.
At the ceremonial opening there was something very special for the citizens present: 50 high-quality thermal bottles were distributed free of charge. This should not only encourage people to use the fountain, but also make a sustainable contribution to preventing plastic waste. Who needs disposable bottles when you can transport your own fresh water in style?
Financing and costs
The installation of the fountain cost a total of around 20,000 euros. This sum is made up of funding from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which amounts to 8,000 euros, a generous donation from the dissolved Frankenthal Kiwanis local association also amounting to 8,000 euros and a contribution from the municipal utilities of 4,000 euros. This joint effort shows that the city and its partners have a knack for promoting environmental awareness and citizen-friendly projects.
Further plans for drinking water dispensers
And that's not all! The first drinking water fountain was opened on Rathausplatz in the summer of 2024, and the city plans to set up two more drinking water dispensers on Jakobsplatz and in Ostpark. In addition, a new water dispenser will be installed on the station forecourt after its renovation. With these measures, Frankenthal will become even more livable and environmentally conscious.
The Frankenthal city administration also covers the annual consumption and maintenance costs. This includes monthly water sampling and billing for the water drawn off according to consumption. A small plaque on the fountain commemorates the generous donors who made this project possible.
The initiative for drinking water dispensers in Frankenthal is a step in the right direction, which not only improves the drinking water supply, but also contributes to environmental protection. So the next time you pass the Speyerer Tor, you should definitely try out the new fountain and treat yourself to a refreshing break - without any plastic waste!
