Revolution at the train station: PKP Intercity tests a new IC connection in Hoyerswerda!

An exciting news from Hoyerswerda: On June 25, 2025 at 1:30 p.m., an IC train from the Polish State Railway PKP Intercity at the train station there-without being listed in the timetable! This “incognito” stopover served to carry out important measuring work, which should pave the way for a new cross -border connection between Leipzig and Przemyśl. From mid -December 2025, two trains in both directions are to serve this route every day, which will lead over trendy places such as Krakau, Breslau, Hoyerswerda and Ruhland. Such direct connections could significantly upgrade the region and improve the connection to metropolitan areas such as Dresden and Leipzig.

Mayor Mirko Pink was personally present at the test stop and optimistically commented on the advantages for the region. Especially in Hoyerswerda, where the platform with 143 meters offers enough space for the 138 -meter -long trains, the suitability of the train systems was impressively demonstrated by technical tests. The examiners received support from students from the TU Dresden, who together ensure that everything works smoothly.

challenges in the connection

Not all places in the area currently benefit from the current developments. The Mayor of Niesky, Kathrin Uhlemann, is worried and has expressed the wish that her city will also be connected to the IC route. At the moment, however, a direct stop is not possible because the platform systems are not suitable. However, a connection could be realized through existing regional and local transport connections, which would be a ray of hope for Niesky's residents.

The final status of the IC connection remains uncertain. Many hope for further views of the PKP Intercity in Lusatia to open up new opportunities for the region.

train trips on the upswing

The prospects for rail passenger traffic are basically rosy. In 2023, rail traffic in the EU reached a maximum of 429 billion person kilometers and recorded an increase of 11.2 % compared to the previous year. The railways used 8 billion passengers for national trips-a remarkable increase in almost 68 % since 2020. Germany as one of the main actors in this area alone transported 2.7 billion travelers and thus accounts for 33.9 % of total EU transport.

The trend shows that more and more people are relying on the track and using the advantages of rail transport. In addition, reduced tickets such as the BahnCard 25 could help to further increase the attractiveness. With prices from € 7.90 for children and € 40.90 for seniors who offer 25 % on ticket prices, travel is not only environmentally friendly, but also inexpensive.

In the region, the progress in rail transport and the upcoming IC connections, which, they would come about, could make it easier to travel between Hoyerswerda and large cities in the area. Those responsible have a good hand - now we can only hope that the wishes of the citizens are also reflected in reality.
