New center for e-bike batteries: Liofit focuses on sustainability in Kamenz!

There is a lot of investment in the future in Kamenz! Today the ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for the new Liofit GmbH company building took place. Saxony's Economics Minister Dirk Panter personally delivered the funding decision to Managing Director Dr. Ralf Günther. This is funding of 1.38 million euros, which is provided as part of the Circular Economy Directive from funds from the European Regional Development Fund and from state funds.

Liofit has positioned itself as a pioneer in the industry by extending the lifespan of e-bike batteries while setting new standards in the repair and processing of lithium batteries. In this regard, the company plans to build an advanced center for repair, disassembly and recycling of lithium batteries with a capacity of less than 1 kWh. This ultra-modern facility will be built in the “Am Ochsenberg” commercial area and is scheduled to begin operations in 2026.

Innovative technologies for the environment

The investment sum of around three million euros will not only benefit Liofit GmbH, but will also make a positive contribution to the environment. The company will use renewable energy and implement energy-efficient processes to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The planned technologies include discharge current from bicycle batteries, a heat pump with underfloor heating and a photovoltaic system.

What is particularly noteworthy is that Liofit is the first company in Germany to combine the production and recycling of batteries under one roof. With its own technology, the company is a technological leader in the repair of bicycle batteries and develops its own reading devices and AI solutions. The customer base includes private individuals as well as bicycle dealers and battery manufacturers.

Outlook into the future

The importance of the project is also underlined by the new EU battery regulation, which will come into force from 2027. This regulation provides for a right to repairs for manufacturers-independent companies, which Liofit would like to use as an advantage. Despite fire damage in 2023, the company is currently operating from an interim location, while all necessary fire safety and regulatory approvals have already been granted at the new location.

The resumption of recycling in the new center is planned for 2026 and marks an important step towards an environmentally friendly future for e-bikes and their batteries. This means that Liofit is not only an economic engine for Kamenz, but also a role model in the sustainable use of resources.
