Make it green days: Chemnitz turns into an environmental oasis!

Chemnitz will again become the setting for environmental awareness in September 2023! The “Mach’s Grüner Days” take place from September 1 to 30, now in the third edition. Organized by the Team Stadtnatur, consisting of the city planning office, the environmental office and the green area office, the organizers want to draw attention to the topic of "nature in the city" and at the same time show how everyone can influence. Chemnitz.de reports that the event offers a colorful program that is free of charge and publicly accessible.

The diverse program includes lectures and tours that deal with natural topics. In addition, numerous Chemnitz clubs, committed citizens: inside and the botanical garden. A special highlight are the bicycle tours to the Chemnitz community gardens and an exploration tour along the Chemnitz River. And for all cycling friends: The "city cycling" takes place from September 1 to 21, with a large star trip on September 6th, which takes place as part of "Sports United".

focus on climate protection and sustainability

The "Mach it's green days" are not isolated. They fit into the week of the climate adjustment and the action week for building green, which take place from September 18 to September 22, 2023. These events pursue the goal of raising awareness of the importance of climate protection and climate adaptation and at the same time taking up the European issues of mobility and climate justice. [Blick.de] (https://www.blick.de/chemnitz/umwelschutz-und- sustainability-die-gruenen-tage-in-chemnitz-artikel13052371) provides further information.

A special event is the Gründach forum on September 21 in the Chemnitz active building, where visitors can learn more about green roofs and measures for climate adaptation. The Urban Nature Slam is also planned on September 22nd in the World Techo, a poetry slam in which the audience selects the winner. For our small environmental ambassadors, a children's conference on the subject of bicycle will take place on September 25th. Around 80 Chemnitz elementary school students will take part and support the “Rader driving” project of the TU Chemnitz.

Urban Gardening as the key to urban ecology

A great focus is also on the Urban Gardening. According to [the sustainability channel] (https://der- sustainability canal.de/urban-gardening-schluessel-in-der-Stadtoecology-2025/), Urban Gardening 2025 plays a key role in urban ecology. Over 50% of the world's population now lives in cities, which makes green habitats and projects such as community gardens all the more important. They not only contribute to improving the quality of life in urban areas, but also promoting urban ecology through new plant species and creating ecological oases.

Community gardens and other green initiatives support biological diversity and offer numerous ecosystem services, such as air purification and flood reduction. In Chemnitz, a flowering area workshop on September 25 will present the results of the “Chemnitz blooming” project. Solutions to create more flower variety are to be developed, which is particularly important for urban biodiversity.

The "Mach’s Green Days" are not just an event, but a step to a more sustainable city. Let us enter a greener chemnitz together!
