Handlooms from the Palitzsch Museum find a new home in Hofmühle!

Something is happening in the heart of Dresden. The Palitzsch Museum, a well-known gem for fans of textile art, has closed its doors to the historic handlooms that have long been a central element of the museum. Until the end of 2024, these fascinating objects were not only exhibits, but were also actively used and maintained by a dedicated web group. This took a little longer, but the Dresden Youth Art School had to stop offering the web group due to staffing reasons. But don't worry, the topic of weaving lives on!

Thanks to a clever solution, the valuable handlooms are now available on loan Hofmühle Museum in Altplauen. There, art lovers have the opportunity to admire the chairs integrated into the permanent exhibition and even lend a hand themselves. Not only history comes to life here, but also the art of weaving, which often takes a back seat in our digital age. A real win for visitors!

A good place for weaving art

The decision to bring the handlooms to Altplauen is no coincidence. The Hofmühle Museum offers the best opportunities not only to observe the old techniques, but also to try them out yourself. Textile crafts will undoubtedly continue to have a place in Dresden's cultural landscape. Artists and those interested can try out the traditional machines here and experience the craft up close.

Maintaining the art of weaving is not only important for current generations. The next generation in particular could benefit from the experience. There is a growing trend that shows more and more young people are developing an interest in traditional crafts. Creative offerings like this have a wonderful opportunity to rekindle the love of crafts.

A look into the future

Those responsible at the museum are optimistic about the new collaboration. They see the integration of the handlooms into the exhibition as an enrichment, not only for the Hofmühle Museum, but for the entire cultural landscape of Dresden. This could even be the start of further collaboration between various cultural institutions in the city.

In summary, we can say that weaving is celebrating a comeback in Dresden and the commitment to preserving cultural heritage is still very popular. A big thank you to everyone who helps ensure that this craftsmanship is not forgotten!
