Unbearable women's power: exhibition on the GDR women's movement in Dresden

In Dresden, a lot is currently happening in the cultural area. The municipal libraries and the Technical University of Dresden present an exciting exhibition that deals intensively with the roots of the independent women's movement of the late GDR. Under the title "Together we are unbearable", we accompany this significant part of the story, which not only affects the time, but also today's discussion about equality and civil courage. The opening took place on Monday, July 21, 2025, in the central library in the Kulturpalast Dresden and is accompanied by a colorful supporting program. The Dresden city administration cordially invites all interested parties to participate in this exciting journey through history.

The exhibition can be seen until August 15, 2025. The large opening on July 24, 2025 at 6 p.m. in the Kulturpalast is accompanied by a live podcast of the TU Dresden, "You Ask We Explain". In addition, the Tud Lectures Plus with the moderator Lisa-Marie Eberharter are an integral part of the program. For all those who want to experience the exhibition, the Kulturpalast is an optimal meeting point to learn more about the women who are seen as pioneers for the peaceful revolution. With their courage and ideas, these women not only wrote history at the time, but still shape social debates about equality and freedom. The Technical University of Dresden is proud to support this important exhibition.

a rich program

Accompanying the exhibition, numerous events take place. On July 28th and August 2, there is the bus tour "Rebellessen on axis", which gives the participants insight into important places of the women's movement. In addition, visitors can look forward to the final event "Thinking together" on August 14, 2025, which is designed by contemporary witnesses and actors of the movement. If you want to learn more about the background and the challenges of women in the GDR, you will find the opportunity to deal with exciting conversations, films and student articles.

In addition to the exhibition, the cultural context cannot be neglected. The political and economic equality of women has been a goal of the labor movement since the 19th century. In the early GDR, a wide range of measures have tried to promote equality. Over 90 percent of women were employed or in training in the 1980s, even if many of them worked in typical men's professions. However, despite the achievements, the social roles remained rather shaped, and the highest positions of power were still reserved for men. The Federal Center for Political Education describes how the women's day was perceived as a "day of the wrong world" and how important it is to continue this discussion today.

Overall, the city of Dresden expects an exciting time with plenty of space for discussions and reflections on the achievements and challenges of the women's movement. The Kulturpalast once again proves to be a place of encounter and knowledge exchange. Take the opportunity to be part of this important social discussion!
