Heat wave hits: Frankenthal calls for tree watering!

In the city of Frankenthal, where summer this year is characterized by extreme drought and high temperatures, Mayor Dr. Nicolas Meyer has a clear concern: watering trees and green spaces is the responsibility of the city. Not only do the city staff support the maintenance of the city's greenery, but external service providers are also hired to ensure that the trees are adequately watered during this hot phase. Especially in times like these, when heat and drought inevitably put pressure on the city, increased irrigation teams are deployed to ensure the vitality of the plants. The fire department also provides valuable help with selective watering campaigns, especially for the older and larger trees.

But the responsibility does not rest solely on the shoulders of the city administration. The citizens of Frankenthal are also warmly invited to help with the watering. A simple contribution, such as watering with a standard watering can (10 liters), can significantly support the survival of shrubs and perennials. Larger trees need at least 40 to 60 liters of water per week for their well-being, ideally spread over one or two watering sessions.

The challenges of climate change

However, the current extreme weather conditions are not without challenges. According to gruen-ist-leben.de, heat is not only a stress factor for many tree species, but is also exacerbated by the often limited root space in urban areas. Markus Guhl, General Manager of the Association of German Tree Nurseries, emphasizes the urgency of effective support for trees through adequate irrigation. 100 liters of water is considered a good base to maintain the trees' vital functions, such as providing shade and coolness.

To meet these challenges, the city of Frankenthal has initiated a heat action plan. As part of the “Frankenthal 2035” development process, additional focus is placed on climate protection and adaptation to climate change. In addition to irrigation, the selection of suitable tree species is also becoming increasingly important in order to achieve better results with rapidly changing weather conditions. After all, trees are not only a beautiful sight, but also essential for a livable city, as they purify the air and help regulate temperatures.

A common goal for the future

The city administration is calling on all Frankenthal residents to come together to preserve the city's greenery. Watering should be done early in the morning or evening to minimize the rate of evaporation. The city is also examining how the extraction of water for supporting watering campaigns can be made easier in order to make it easier for citizens to help.

At a time when cities are racing against climate change and battling challenges such as heat and heavy rain, it is clear that an engaged community is critical to success. The Federal Environment Agency also emphasizes that green spaces are essential for citizens' recreation and quality of life. Together we can make an important contribution and ensure that Frankenthal remains a green and livable home in the future.

The city would like to thank everyone who is actively committed to preserving the city's greenery and thus working together to improve the city's climate. Only by acting together can we succeed in preserving our trees and thus the attitude to life in the city.
