Digital passport photos from May: Kamenz relies on modern self-recording devices!
Something is happening in the citizen service in Kamenz: Since the new regulations, from May 1, 2025, only digital passport photos are permitted when applying for ID documents. This decision was made to prevent counterfeiting and manipulation, particularly through morphing. Just in time for the change, the city administration received modern self-recording devices on June 24, 2025, which are now used in citizen services. Kamenz reports of two ways in which citizens can have their photographs taken.
The first option is to visit a photo studio, where those photographed receive a code. This code allows the passport and ID authority to securely load the image from a cloud. However, the fees for this are charged by the photo studio. For those who want it to be quick and easy, there is the second option: In the citizen service itself, the photographs can be created directly on the new devices. Users follow instructions on a monitor, track a point and leave fingerprints. However, an additional fee of EUR 6.00 is charged for this service. Regular applicants for ID cards and passports should also be prepared for longer processing times - around 3 to 4 weeks for ID cards and up to 8 weeks for passports.
The legal framework
Loud Laws on the Internet The requirements for the new photographic recordings are precisely regulated. Passport photos must be 35 x 45 mm in size; in the passport these are reduced to 32 x 41 mm. In addition, illustrated stickers for changing your place of residence and official notices are also dealt with in cooperation with the authorities.
These measures also take a long overdue step towards digitizing the ID process to provide citizens with faster and easier access. From May 2025, only digital passport photos will be permitted in Germany, which is part of the legal initiative to strengthen security in the passport system. The draft law was already passed in 2020 and is now being implemented.
Additional information and important information for citizens
daily news highlights that people without a smartphone or internet also have the opportunity to have their photo taken at the passport office for a fee of EUR 6.00. It's best to find out about the new regulations and fees in advance to avoid surprises. The new system brings new opportunities to many citizens, but some photographers in the region see themselves at a disadvantage. The transition to digital image capture devices could be associated with high costs for photo studios.
