Climate change threatens Schanze Brohna: archaeologists raise the alarm!
archaeological excitement not only in Saxony, but also beyond national borders! As part of the Interreg project "Fragile Erbe/Kruche Dziedzictwo", research will be carried out at various historical sites, including the Bohna ski jump, from October 2024 to September 2027. The project is carried by the State Office for Archeology Saxony and the Natural Science University of Wroclaw and aims to maintain and protect valuable monuments. Innovative methods such as aerial photographs with drones and targeted excavations are planned to examine the monument substance of the Hanze Brohna in detail.
The work becomes particularly challenging through the current effects of climate change, which lead to new threats to archaeological sites. Dry periods, a falling groundwater mirror and extreme weather events such as heavy rain and storms are increasingly increasing the region's valuable heirs. According to current reports, over 80 % of the archaeological ground monuments in Saxony can be found on land or forestry used, which also increases the challenges. The increasing expansion of renewable energies represents further pressure on these areas that have already been endangered.
maintenance in focus
The central question of the project is how the condition of these monuments records and how the degree of risk can be assessed. A criteria catalog with recommendations for action and possible protective measures is developed in order to preserve the archaeological finds for future generations. The desired results should not only stay on paper, but should be implemented in a practical manner in order to combine climate protection, energy transition and monument protection.
The entire project is supported by funding from the European Union from the European Fund for Regional Development as part of the Interreg Poland-Saxony 2021-2027. The project promises to provide valuable impulses for monument protection in the region and at the same time find answers to the challenges of climate change.
If you want to find out more about the project, you can contact the project office at Fabrikstraße 500, 02625 Bautzen or by phone at 03591/54977-10. Also an email to fragileserbe@lfa.sachsen.de offers the opportunity to learn more about the planned measures.
In a time when environmental protection and monument protection have to go more and more hand in hand, this project is a step in the right direction. Stay on it, because in the coming months there will certainly be a lot to happen in this area!
