Promote insects and live as neighbors: Free workshop in Chemnitz!
An exciting initiative to promote native insects is being launched in the heart of Chemnitz. On Thursday, August 21st, a workshop dedicated to insect diversity will take place in the environmental center at Henriettenstraße 5. Interested citizens can take part free of charge from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., provided they register by August 20th - by phone on 0371 488 6177 or by email to Umweltzentrum(at)stadt-chemnitz.de. This is part of the Capital of Culture program Living Neighborhood, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of insects in our environment. Experts from the projects “Chemnitz is blooming!” and “iNUVERSUMM” will contribute their experience and knowledge of flowering areas, meadow mowing and dry stone walls.
In times when the problems of biodiversity are becoming more and more pressing, it is important to know how we can actively support insects. According to Global Nature's annual report, it shows that approximately 80% of wild plants and 75% of major crops rely on pollination by insects. This also has clear economic dimensions: pollination in Germany generates an economic benefit of around 3.8 billion euros per year. Given these numbers, it is clear that the initiative in Chemnitz not only has local relevance, but also contributes to the overarching issue of insect promotion at the landscape level, as Global Nature reports.
Measures to promote insects
The workshop is accompanied by a guide entitled “More than just flower strips!” was published. This 60-page publication not only contains the results of the EU-LIFE project “Insect-Promoting Regions”, but also a comprehensive 46-page catalog of measures that offers practical assistance for promoting insects at the landscape level. The measures are diverse and range from “field edge strips” to the “wide row”. The goal is to create a connected network to promote biodiversity in agricultural use as well as in communities and gardens.
In addition, the information from Umweltpakt Bayern offers a practical approach by taking into account different land use groups such as arable farming, grassland, fruit and wine growing and gardens. Over 60 demonstration farms tested these measures as part of a study, and the experience gained is incorporated directly into the recommendations.
A call for participation
The Chemnitz workshop not only opens up a space for exchange and learning opportunities, but also calls for people to actively participate in the preservation and promotion of insect diversity. After all, it is important these days to take care of nature with a good hand. Abundant insect life is essential for our environment and healthy ecosystems. Everyone's commitment is required - be it through practical measures in their own garden or through participation in events like this.
