Zietenstrasse finally opened after two years of construction!
What moves Chemnitz? The residents of Zietenstrasse have every reason to be happy, because the extensive construction project, which took more than two years, will soon be completed. The road will finally open to traffic on Friday, December 13th at 11am. This detailed renovation was a joint project in which several partners worked hand in hand. On this occasion, not only will the road surface shine in new splendour, but the infrastructure has also been massively improved.
The Construction project was really extensive. The ESC (Energy Supply Chemnitz) renewed the main mixed water sewer over a distance of 305 meters. Sophisticated, right? In addition, all house connections for sewage and rainwater over a length of around 245 meters were leaked and repaired, and six new shafts were built so that everything runs according to regulations. In addition, eins/inetz has continued the district heating development throughout the entire construction area, which also applies to all house connections.
Improvements for residents
It wasn't just the water pipes that received an upgrade. The drinking water transport and supply lines as well as the high-pressure gas line were also replaced. But that's not all: the power supply and house connections also provided a breath of fresh air. Newly installed city lighting ensures that Zietenstrasse is no longer in the dark.
The work on the roadway and side areas was also extensive. Massive excavations made it possible to renew the road between Augustusburger Strasse and Sonnenstrasse to around 290 meters. And not only was the street itself rebuilt with high-quality materials in load class (Bk) 10, there were also new sidewalks equipped with concrete slab treadmills and eco-paving. Another plus point is the newly structured tree locations, which give the streetscape a greener touch.
- Neu gebaute Längsparkstellplätze in Granitpflasterbauweise.
- Zwei barrierefreie Bushaltestellen.
- Zwei gesicherte barrierefreie Fußgängerüberwege.
- Neue Fahrradanlehnbügel.
Particular attention was paid to accessibility, which will delight many residents and especially seniors. This resulted in two new barrier-free bus stops and two secured pedestrian crossings, which ensure smooth and safe crossing. Asphalt work was also carried out at the intersection of Augustusburger Straße and Zietenstraße to further improve traffic safety.
Financing and scheduling
The ESC took over the coordination of the entire measure, contributing a cost of 0.74 million euros, while eins/inetz recorded costs of 2.43 million euros. The road construction costs only 1.38 million euros (gross). What was particularly pleasing was that the planned budget for road construction was adhered to, although the construction period was extended by around three months. This was necessary because the condition of the existing lines and media was more extensive than originally thought.
Work on Zietenstrasse began in mid-November 2022, and the completion date was originally planned for October 2024. With the new date in December 2024, the Chemnitz city council, which decided on the complete renovation in May 2022, has also ensured that citizens in the region can finally get some fresh air without having to take detours.
In any case, once completed, Zietenstrasse will not only bring more comfort for the numerous residents, but will also significantly improve the cityscape. A good hand from those responsible to make Chemnitz even more livable!
