Dresden is testing state-of-the-art sirens: test alarm on July 9, 2025!

On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, it will be that time again: At 3 p.m., the sirens will sound for a test alarm in Dresden for twelve seconds. This event is part of the regular tests the city carries out to ensure the functionality of its warning systems in an emergency. Dresden can rely on a modern infrastructure that is one of the most advanced siren warning systems in all of Germany. Loud dresden.de There are 210 siren locations in the city that can not only emit beeps but also voice announcements to provide citizens with comprehensive information.

What is particularly exciting is that the siren systems remain functional for up to 48 hours even during power outages thanks to battery backup. If the fire and disaster control office checks these facilities four times a year, the next regular test alarm is scheduled for October 8, 2025. This shows that security is very important in Dresden.

The nationwide warning day

In addition to the local tests, Dresden regularly takes part in the nationwide warning day. The next one will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2025. On this day, a uniform alarm will be triggered at 11 a.m., followed by an all-clear at 11:45 a.m., as tag24.de reported. The focus here is on checking the alarm systems to protect the population. Anyone who uses the warning via an app such as NINA or BIWAK will receive a notification on their smartphone, while the cell broadcast system also sends an automatic warning in the form of a loud tone.

During this signal, citizens in Dresden can prepare for a special soundscape that will be heard both in the city center and in other parts of the city. Security Mayor Jan Pratzka emphasizes that Dresden has one of the most modern siren warning systems and is therefore well equipped.

Siren Support Program

The efforts to use the latest technology are no coincidence. After the flood disasters in 2021 and the first nationwide warning day in 2020, the siren funding program was launched. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) is providing funding to improve the siren infrastructure in Germany. Many of the existing devices came from a time when they did not meet today's standards. The goals include, among other things, equipping the sirens with the ability to signal “population warning” and “all clear”. bbk.bund.de explained.

A total of 14.5 million euros in funding is available for 2023 and 2024. Municipalities can apply for these funds, but must meet certain minimum requirements. With the modernization of the sirens, the availability of the warning channel should also be significantly increased.
