Important renovation in Dresden: Wehlener Straße will be barrier-free and modern!

A lot is happening in Dresden, especially when it comes to the comprehensive renovation of Wehlener Strasse, Alttolkewitz and Österreicher Strasse. Since March 2024, measures have been implemented here that not only repair flood damage from 2013, but also improve accessibility and create infrastructure for new light rail vehicles. The construction section extends over around 1,900 meters between Schlömilchstrasse and Leubener Strasse, and the city has set itself ambitious goals.

The plan calls for a complete renovation of the roadway, tram tracks and footpaths. All underground pipes such as drinking water, gas, electricity, telephone and sewage will also be replaced. There are also new cycle paths and wider footpaths, which not only benefit pedestrians but also cyclists. Particularly noteworthy are the barrier-free stops that will be set up at central points such as Wasserwerk, Alttolkewitz, Hermann-Seidel-Straße and Leubener Straße to make accessibility easier.

Current work and progress

As the city administration reports in its current report, the work is right on schedule. Sections between the Schlömilchstrasse and Alttolkewitz and from Salzburger Strasse to Bleiche have already been successfully completed. Construction work is currently focused on the stretches between Alttolkewitz and Niederpoyritzer Straße and from Tauernstraße to Leubener Straße. Overall, the interim results of the diversion routes show positive results, although minor adjustments will be made on Donathstrasse.

The project's new financial situation is also encouraging. The total costs amount to around 42 million euros, of which around 8.8 million euros are provided by the city of Dresden. This extensive renovation is also being funded by the Free State of Saxony and the federal government from the 2013 development aid fund. What is particularly noteworthy is that the planned cost framework is largely adhered to and any additional costs are in the low single-digit percentage range.

Collaboration for the future

The city administration is working closely with the Dresden transport company, SachsenEnergie and the Dresden city drainage system to implement the planned work efficiently and smoothly. The construction work is in the hands of ARGE Wehlener Straße Dresden, which includes Wolff & Müller, EUROVIA and STRABAG. Together they have set themselves the goal of significantly increasing the quality of traffic and quality of life in this area.

With planned completion by the end of December 2025, not only will the streetscape be refreshed, but the safety and comfort of all road users will also be improved. The city relies on a future-oriented infrastructure that focuses on the needs of its citizens - there is clearly something important for the quality of life in Dresden!
