Mayoral election in Kamenz: This is how the vote works!
Today, August 22, 2025, there is exciting news from the large district town of Kamenz. The mayoral election is taking place on September 28, 2025, and preparations are in full swing. The notice of this election was already published in Official Gazette No. 23/2025 on June 7, 2025. From now on, citizens are called upon to submit their nominations to run for this important office, as kamenz.de reports.
Voters in Kamenz are particularly in demand because everyone over the age of 18 can cast their vote. This applies not only to Germans, but also to EU citizens who have lived in the city for at least three months. So who can apply for the office of mayor? The most important thing is to meet the general personal requirements for civil service status. An exciting race is coming!
The election process at a glance
The mayor has a central role in the city of Kamenz, as she is not only the chairwoman of the local council, but also the head of the local administration. The election itself is a direct civil right and is universal, immediate, free, equal and secret. The voters only have one vote, and if an absolute majority is not achieved in the first round, a second round of voting will follow on October 26, 2025, as explained in the Elections in Saxony.
But what happens if there is no result in the second round of voting? This will be exciting! The candidate with the most votes wins; if there is a tie, the draw decides. This is one of the special features of the Saxon municipal code, which in the version dated March 9, 2018, last changed on May 29, 2024, sets out the legal framework for such elections.
Eligibility and election workers
When it comes to eligibility, some criteria must be taken into account. People over 65 are not eligible to run for the office of full-time mayor. Also excluded are those who have already been disciplined or convicted of intentional acts. This ensures that only the most suitable candidates are chosen to lead the city's fortunes.
There is also the option of registering as a poll worker. Anyone who comes from Kamenz and is eligible to vote can make a valuable contribution to the implementation of the election. Anyone interested can simply contact the city on 03578 / 379 154 or by email at wahlhelfer@stadt.kamenz.de.
For many citizens, local elections are a matter of the heart as they are often directly influenced by local issues. Everyone who places their cross contributes to shaping their homeland. These elections are a wonderful opportunity to raise your voice together and help shape what happens in your own city. The Federal Agency for Civic Education emphasizes that these elections in particular often have lower turnouts than state or federal elections, which shows how important every single vote is.
We will of course keep you up to date on all developments surrounding the mayoral election on September 28, 2025. Good luck in the election and good luck to the future candidates!
