Eight trees in Chemnitz like: Refurbishment of the Lohrstrasse begins!
This morning, August 27, 2025, eight maple trees were felled in Lohrstraße in the Schloßchemnitz district. The reason for this measure: the Lohrstraße is fundamentally renovated and during the preparations it turned out that the trees were rooted in a concrete slab. The city planners originally hoped to be able to preserve the trees. However, a more precise investigation showed that they had no long -term development perspective.
The trees were also positioned so close to the intended new roadboard that root damage would have been inevitable. The tree slices that surround the roots were also completely sealed, which significantly impaired water and nutrient supply. After weighing up the advantages and disadvantages, the specialist offices of the city of Chemnitz decided to fell the trees and to carry out new plantings at optimized locations. This procedure should also guarantee the maintenance of the previous parking regulations, since other variants, such as longitudinal or inclined parking, would have cost up to 20 parking spaces.
permits and species protection laws
It is important to emphasize that the corresponding permits for the felling are presented. A control under species protection showed that there were no breeding and nesting sites of protected species in the trees or their surroundings. There were also no indications of life facilities of bats or insects, which also simplified the decision.
What is on the agenda? The tree slices at the currently planned locations are redesigned to improve the growth conditions of the new plantings. These new plantings are already planned for this autumn and should be carried out together with plantings in an adjacent section between Blankenauer Straße and Wilhelm-Külz-Platz.
Legal framework of the tree felling
The felling were organized taking into account the legal regulations. The Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNASCHG) protects trees in the open nature and provides strict false bans during the breeding and setting times. Local regulations can have additional regulations on the tree falling that varies depending on the federal state. Local tree protection statutes could also be used, which require neighboring contacts, a tree near a property border should be felled.
The city has adhered to the guidelines when felling and complied with all the necessary procedures in order to avoid legal problems. If these requirements are disregarded, fines or other legal consequences would not be excluded.
use for biodiversity
The new planting of the trees is not only a reaction to infrastructural requirements, but also a contribution to combating the loss of biodiversity, which is part of the project Biodiversity capacity in the urban area Biodivity tree) is sought. This project, launched by the Federal Office for Nature Conservation, aims to protect and plant city trees in order to take into account both biodiversity and adaptation to climatic changes.
In this sense, the responsible procedure of the city of Chemnitz should go to school. Because for future generations it is crucial that the right balance between urban development and nature conservation is preserved. The optimization of the growth conditions and the promotion of the city grass - there is something!
