Safe routes to school: Chemnitz improves safety for ABC shooters!

The start of the school year on Monday, August 11, 2025 is just around the corner and will bring many children their first day of school. The school route security group in Chemnitz has already done a lot to ensure that the little explorers get to their new educational institutions safely. Those who make their way to school every day can look forward to numerous improvements in school route safety. As part of a committed collaboration with the traffic authority, the school authority and the Chemnitz police department, to name just a few, important measures have already been implemented to eliminate danger spots and deficiencies in the road space.

These initiatives aim to significantly increase safety for the youngest road users. Particularly noteworthy is the reduction of the maximum speed to 30 km/h in several sensitive areas, including the Weststraße primary school on Reichsstraße/Weststraße and the Harthau primary school on Annaberger Straße. These speed limits are intended to ensure that children can get to school unhindered and safely.

Concrete measures for more security

The past few months have shown that measures to ensure safety on the way to school are urgently needed. Among other things, parking stalls at the Glösa primary school were dismantled, which ensures better visibility and more space to move around. Markings were also made on Hoffmannstrasse at the Pablo Neruda Elementary School to ensure that parental traffic does not lead to dangerous situations.

The visual presence of traffic information is particularly important. Pictograms in the 30 km/h zone on Zöllnerstrasse remind drivers to adjust their speed and thus ensure the safety of school children.

Prospects for the coming year

Planning for the coming period is already in full swing. The plan is to improve the crossing at the DPFA Rainbow School through innovative measures such as the installation of bollards. In addition, further pictograms will be installed in the 30 km/h zone on Lichtenauer Straße and the speed reduction on Waldenburger Straße near Friedrich August III. High school is being pushed forward.

At the start of the school year, the Chemnitz Police Department, together with the public order office, will also be making every effort to ensure that traffic near the school is safe. The volunteers of the Chemnitz traffic police e. V. will also assist in securing the way to school. Together, those responsible are calling on people to be particularly attentive in these sensitive areas and to adjust the speed.
