Dresden's new e-bikes and e-scooters are taking off: experience mobility in a new way!

A lot is happening in terms of mobility in the state capital Dresden. After the city called for expressions of interest in bike sharing and e-scooter sharing in May 2025, things will get serious from August 1, 2025. The providers LIME and VOI will then be allowed to distribute up to 1,000 e-bikes each on the streets of Dresden. These approvals were granted on July 18, 2025 and are intended to expand the existing mobility offerings, which were previously limited to the classic MOBIbikes.

Although the MOBIbikes have provided reliable service, they have reached their limits, especially when it comes to comprehensive coverage and the lack of electrical support. Now things are getting a breath of fresh air: The new e-bikes and e-scooters will not only function as feeders to the train station, but will also be used for direct journeys within the city. Things are going really well here!

Permits and providers

E-scooter providers are also showing great interest. Six companies applied for the three available permits, and on the same day as the permits for the e-bikes, the cards were also reshuffled for the e-scooters. BOLT, VOI and RideMovi are each allowed to offer up to 833 e-scooters in the city. This broadens the range of e-scooters, which will certainly make them more attractive to use for Dresden residents.

The transition period will be particularly exciting: while the new providers put their vehicles on the roads, there could be an increase in incorrectly parked vehicles. But don't worry - the city has taken precautions and will bind the new providers to strict conditions decided by the city council. These include, among other things, distribution quotas, checks through geopositioning and the detection of lying e-scooters. This shows that Dresden has a good hand when it comes to order and user-friendliness.

New mobility with an overview

The new sharing concepts are intended to help keep the roads free of obstacles. Provider-neutral sharing stations that will set up digital restricted areas around the stations are being planned. This ensures that e-scooters can only be returned to these specific locations. This not only makes traffic smoother, but also increases acceptance of the new mobility offerings.

In order to evaluate the success of the measures, an interim review is planned after one year. In this way, the city is responding to the needs of citizens, and in particular to the voices of people with visual impairments and mobility restrictions. This shows that the city is not only interested in the latest trends, but also attaches great importance to inclusion.

The new e-scooters and e-bikes will enrich the existing mobility landscape in Dresden and could offer an exciting, environmentally friendly alternative to cars. It will be interesting to see how things will develop when the new offers are launched on August 1, 2025. Anticipation is the order of the day!
